The New 20- and 32-Pin Devices With a LIN Interface and Timers Boost the Number of R8C/Tiny Series Devices to 184 to Cover a Wide Range of Application Areas

SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Dec. 7, 2005— Renesas Technology America, Inc. today expanded its R8C/Tiny series of small, low-pin-count, high-performance 16-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) with on-chip flash memory by adding 36 new models, including some that offer low-voltage (2.2 to 5.5V) and wide-temperature-range (-40 to +125 degrees C) operation. Devices in the R8C/26 and R8C/27 groups have compact (7 x 7mm) 32-pin LQFP packages, while those in the R8C/28 and R8C/29 groups have even smaller (6.5 x 4.4mm) 20-pin LSSOP packages. Now system engineers can choose from a comprehensive lineup of 184 R8C/Tiny series MCUs offering diverse combinations of performance, functionality and cost to more easily obtain optimum solutions for a wide span of applications and a diverse variety of design requirements.

For the R8C/26 and R8C/27 product groups, the on-chip flash memory for program storage is either 32, 24, 16 or 8Kbytes, while for the R8C/28 and R8C/29 groups, it is 16 or 8Kbytes. Moreover, the MCUs in the R8C/27 and R8C/29 groups include an extra 2Kbytes of data flash memory with higher endurance (organized as two 1Kbyte blocks) that can be used for both program and data storage.

As with current R8C/Tiny models, the new devices offer a comprehensive range of on-chip peripheral functions, including a high-precision on-chip clock oscillator and a low voltage detection circuit. They also have a high-resolution 16-bit timer that can be clocked at high speeds up to 40MHz by a separate on-chip oscillator, and a LIN interface that is ideal for automotive applications. To simplify the development of LIN-compatible products and reduce the CPU's software processing load, most of the protocol processing is performed by hardware using an 8-bit timer channel and a synchronous/UART serial interface channel.

Ritesh Tyagi, senior marketing manager, system LSI business unit, Renesas Technology America, said, "All models in our R8C/Tiny series are high-performance, easy-to-use MCUs with on-chip flash memory. The addition of these 36 new models to the product line makes available superb solutions for an even wider variety of applications. Whether our customers are developing a battery-operated application which requires low-voltage operation or a high-end automotive application that requires higher temperature specifications, they can now find a small, high-performance and cost-effective R8C/Tiny device that fits their requirements for main processors or sub-processors."

System development tools

Renesas development tools for the new R8C/26, R8C/27, R8C/28, R8C/29 series devices include the E8 emulator/on-chip debugger with single-pin connection capability. It allows all I/O pins to be used during debugging, for more efficient program development, and can also be used as a flash memory writer. The High-performance Embedded Workshop (HEW), an integrated development environment with a full software toolset is available, too, as are tools and services from the many independent vendors that support the R8C series.

Free Factory Flash Programming

With the introduction of the newly added R8C/Tiny devices, Renesas is starting a factory flash programming service with one-time nominal charges. After paying the $1,000 non recurring engineering (NRE) fee, customers do not need to pay additional per device fees. The minimum order quantity for the free factory programming service is 50,000 pieces per year and the minimum lot for each order is 2,000 pieces.
